Studio House

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

As the population of India increases, the need for compact, multi-utility and self-sufficient spaces is on the rise. Keeping this in mind, we have designed this studio apartment for a lovely family in the beautiful city of Jodhpur, India.

Built as an extension/ADU to a 25-year-old house, the structure needed to serve multiple purposes. It had to act as an independent guest room, a study, and a day room for the family members. It has a small footprint of 352sft (33 sqm), including a sleeping area with a queen-size bed, a living area with a custom-built sofa that doubles up as a day bed, a pantry, wardrobe, and a fully functional washroom.

The walls are made in brick and the western facade is clad using locally available jodhpur stone. The local stone cladding is done in a clean and contemporary style, with buffed 3-inch thick stone slate put together in a staggered manner to give it a smooth and clean finish and create a perception of a heavy block of stone with a door carved into it. The metal louvers on the west side widow provide a much-needed shade from the evening sun and privacy from the parking area.

The roof is a combination of a pitched roof and a small part flat RCC slab which houses the services like a water heater and dish antenna. The roof’s pitch is clad in terracotta tiles and faces North, thus decreasing the surface exposed to the direct sun and keeping the insides cool. Big glazes are given on the Northside that overlooks the private garden and connects the outside to the inside.
